Elmo Birthday Party Ideas

Build your best party yet around an Elmo birthday party theme!

If your toddler loves Elmo, it's time to stop searching for the perfect birthday theme. You've found it right here!

Below, you'll find many quick tips and helpful hints to help you throw an Elmo birthday party. Let's get started.

Invites

If you're feeling crafty, you can make your own birthday party invitations. It's simple really...

Using red cardstock paper, cut out Elmo's face (a large Oval shape).

Then, either attach 2 large plastic eyes (the crafting kind with the eyes inside that move when you shake them) or cut 2 white ovals out of construction paper. Finish off with an orange oval shape or pom-pom and a black smile.

For the wording, try something like this:

"Elmo invites you to [your toddler's name]'s birthday party!
Come ready for games, snacks, and plenty of red punch
on [date and time of the party].
Bring your favorite Elmo toy!"

Decorations

Turn a room or yard into "Elmo's World"!!

Try these ideas:

  • Create a banner on your computer that reads as follows "la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la [your child's name]'s World". Hang the banner on your fence or above the entry to your party room.
  • Use Elmo and Sesame Street related props where possible such as posters, toys and books.
  • Stick to red, orange and yellow balloons and streamers.

Games

It's time to break out the Elmo birthday party games!

  • "Pin the Nose on Elmo - Purchase a poster of Elmo and make noses out of construction paper. Be sure to make enough for each child and put their name on the back so that you know which nose belongs to each child. Place a small piece of sticky-tac on the back of each nose and play the game like the classic "Pin the Tail on the Donkey".
  • Elmo Pinata - If you're crafty, you can make one yourself or try purchasing one online. Fill the pinata with the loot bags with each childs name pre-printed on each bag.
  • Elmo bingo - Using your computer, print up bingo cards on red card stock paper. Also print up many small pictures of a goldfish (Elmo's pet) to use as markers. When a child gets a bingo, instruct them to yell out "Elmo!"

Costumes / Props

Costumes are a great way to set the mood and get everyone into the theme of the party. For an Elmo birthday party theme, simply ask your guests to come wearing Elmo colors such as red, orange, yellow and green.

As an added prop, set up a station in advance where the kids can make Elmo caps as they arrive.

These are quite simple to make.

Supply the kids with red ball caps or visors and craft foam sheets (black, white, and orange) with sticky backings.

You can pre-cut the foam into ovals (large orange for nose, medium white for eyes and small black for eye balls). Attach the foam pieces to the cap to make the Elmo face.

This will help to make everyone feel like a part of the fun.

Food and Drink

To start with, you can serve your hungry guests Elmo's favorite food...Pizza!

Then compliment it with these ideas:

  • Orange punch is always a hit and you can always call it "Elmo Juice"!
  • Any finger food is great to serve such as sandwiches, fruits and veggies.
  • Goldfish (crackers) for snacking on....Dorothy.

Cake

You can simply purchase a ready made Elmo birthday party cake from a grocer near you or you can buy an Elmo shaped cake pan online and make the cake yourself.

You may also want to consider individual cupcakes rather than a full sized traditional cake. Here's a great idea on how to create your own Elmo cupcakes:

  • Bake your cupcakes...whatever flavor you prefer.
  • Using red food coloring mixed into white frosting, frost your cupcakes with your newly created red frosting.
  • Using black decorator gel, place black circles onto white candy wafers and then place them vertically into the back edge of the cupcake.
  • Now set a large orange gumdrop close to the eyes in order to create Elmo's nose.
  • Finish off by using a piece of black licorice to form Elmo's smile.
