Conjure Up A Magical Harry Potter Party!

You don't need to be a wizard to successfully plan a Harry Potter party.

For an enchanting celebration, see the tips below.

Invites

Many Harry Potter birthday invitations are available online, but you can feel free to add your own little twist to each one.

After all, each invitation needs to include some vital information, so try following this template to get an idea of how an invitation might read:

"You've been accepted into Hogwarts!
Please join us for [your child's name]'s birthday at [date and time].
You can find your way into our little magical world at [your address].
Please let us know if you plan on attending by calling [your name] at [your phone number]."

Decorations

  • Add blankets to couches and sheets around windows
  • A few Harry Potter posters on the walls will help support your theme.
  • Consider some themed tableware including plates, cups and napkins from an online retailer.
  • Hang a sign outside of the Harry Potter party room stating "Welcome to Hogwarts".

Games

Here are a couple of ideas to help you get started:

  • “Quidditch" - Quidditch, of course, is in quotes because you can't exactly play a game with flying wizards. Instead, use your yard as a small soccer field and divide the teams up into two. Have them play a game of what is essentially soccer, with a few imaginary rules to spice things up. Also, if you have older kids, try and have them act as the coach of each team, making sure everyone gets a chance to play.
  • Harry Potter Party Trivia -Prepare some questions in advance from each of the Harry Potter movies. Give out treats for everyone who has a right answer, even if they don't shout it out first.
  • Wizard Tag -This game is played just like "Frozen Tag" only the players who are frozen can only be released when another player (not frozen) touches them and says a magical phrase such as "Freezous - Removous". Have the person who is "it" wear a wizard's hat to identify them to the others. When the game begins the Wizard will try to tag the players. Tagged players must freeze until another player touches them and casts the magical freeze removal spell on them.

Costumes / Props

Welcome your little guests by dressing them up for the part as they arrive.

  • Using face paint, make a lightning bolt scar on each child's forehead.
  • Issue each a pair of black plastic Harry Potter glasses purchased online in advance.
  • As part of your activities, you can have each child decorate a 12 inch wooden dowel at a craft station. Be sure to include all craft materials such as glitter glue, feathers and colored crepe paper.

Food and Drink

Compliment a pizza lunch with some of these items:

Magic Wands - Using a hot pretzel recipe, simply shape the dough into wands before you bake them. Stack a pile of wands next to the pizza and the kids will feel happy, full, and ready for more magic.

Magic Potion - An ice cream float bursting with fruit flavour. Let the kids mix up their own potions by providing them with several fruit flavored italian syrups. Torani makes a large variety of flavors to choose from.
Place 1-2 scoops of ice cream into each glass and pour the chosen syrup (or syrups if they choose more than one) over top.
Add some club soda (don't worry, the syrup adds the flavor) and top it off with some "Pop Rocks" candy.
