Got your homemade costumes thinking cap on?

Some birthday parties will incorporate costumes into their theme. In fact, this is becoming more and more popular so fine tuning your creative skills may be necessary sooner than you think.

Homemade costumes are fun to make and at the same time will help you to save money.

They don't have to be hard to make either. The hardest part is coming up with a unique idea. Once you've done that, the rest can come together pretty quickly.

Here are a few basic tips (and safety measures) to help you plan out your ideas when designing your homemade costumes. A little planning in advance will prevent frustration and make your designing more enjoyable:

Flame Resistance - Not something most people think about however it's very important. If you go out and buy accessories for your homemade costumes such as masks, beards or wigs, make sure the label states "Flame Resistant." This may not prevent them from catching fire, but they will be more resistant to burning and should extinguish quickly.

Measure - Kids love to run, jump and play, especially when attending a birthday party. When designing your homemade costumes, be sure to properly measure your child so that the costumes will fit correctly and be short enough so as to prevent tripping and falling.

Sponge it - If you're making your own swords, knives, and other weapon accessories be sure to make them out of a soft and flexible material like a firm sponge. This can be the kind you'd find inside old sofa cushions for example.

Make-up, or not!- If your party is for young toddlers, we suggest avoiding any make-up altogether for your homemade costumes. Kids tend to rub their eyes a lot and often there are tears shed at parties due to disagreements with other kids. Try to stick to props rather than dressing up the face (example, use bandana's, scarves, and hats).

Always use common sense, caution and adult supervision to help make a costume party a success.

So remember, homemade costumes should be fun and unique. Design them based on theme and the intended age group.

Whether you're attending a kids birthday party, a teen birthday celebration or an over the hill party gathering, you can add some excitement by including creative homemade costumes into all of your birthday party planning.
