Plan The Best Slumber Party Ever!

Thinking about planning a slumber party?

Getting a group of friends together for an evening of socializing, facial masks and manicures followed by an overnight sleepover can be lots of fun! Especially if it's for your birthday.

If this is something you plan to do...then load up on popcorn, pull out the boardgames and pick out your best pajamas because we've got some great ideas and tips for you below!

Invites

You can purchase ready-made sleepover invitations online or you can make your own right on your home computer.

If you decide to make them yourself, use lots of pink and add a picture of young girls in their pajamas, or faces covered in facial mud masks with cucumbers on the eyes.

Use your imagination and try some wording inside the invite such as this:

[birthday child's name] is turning Nine!
So come on in you're just in time.
The pampering starts at 4 o'clock
Later movie time, the fun won't stop!
On January __, we celebrate
Please, please be there, it will be great!

When the clock strikes noon on the following day
Please send a carriage to pick up your sleeping beauty

Have fun with your wording. Try to make it personal to the birthday child.

If all else fails, as we mentioned before, there are plenty of options online for purchasing your invites. Be sure to check them out.

Decorations

When it comes to decorating for a slumber party, we've got you covered.

In fact, decorating for a slumber party is quite fun and pretty simple at the same time.

Start out with these ideas:

  • Pick a large room (like a basement rec. room) and clear out as much furniture as you can.

  • Hang blankets or sheets to close in the area and to make it more comfy.

  • Use christmas lights for a cool effect by hanging them all over the ceiling.

  • Load the floor with throw pillows, bean bag chairs and anything else people can just slump over and be comfortable on....even sofa cushions will do fine.

  • Bring in loads of helium filled balloons and streamers and scatter them all over the place.

There's plenty more that you can do, but with these basics in place, you'll have achieved setting the mood for a sleepover bash! Feel free to add plenty more if you so choose.

Games

Although there are ample opportunities for games at a slumber party, you'll likely find that fun and exciting "activities" are more of the norm for this type of party.

Here are a few games and activities to keep them busy at this type of party:

  • Play the classical game of "Truth or Dare". Keep it clean and any dares that involve outside ventures (this will depend on the childrens ages and the house rules of course) in the dark should be done in groups and never alone.

  • Watch a good horror film. Scare the silly out of each other during and after the movie is over.

  • Do makeovers, facials and hair styles. Have fun with this and make the hairstyles a little funky.

  • Plan a skit. Pretend you're the cast of High School Musical and put on a show for the parents of the house.

These are just a few simple ideas. There are tons of things that can be done at a slumber party. With a little imagination (and good taste), you can ensure that every game and/or activity you play is one that everyone enjoys.

Costumes / Props

So the obvious costume to wear to a slumber party is pajames of course.

But what if your party has a theme?

Perhaps you're throwing a celebrity sleepover party or maybe even a 70's or 80's party.

If that's the case, then make sure it's mentioned in your invitations so that everyone knows what's expected of them and so they can plan for what they will be wearing.

If you do have a theme, make sure to have a contest for the best costume and offer prizes. This will encourage your guests to be more imaginative with their costume choices.

Food and Drink

Hmm, what food to serve at a slumber party?

Just remember this. In most cases, the kids will not be going to sleep any time before midnight simply out of sheer excitement and adrenaline. With that said, limiting sugar is a good idea...but they'll be hyper already anyway so why not let them indulge themselves a little bit.

So for a few ideas on what to serve, try these:

  • Pizza as the main food
  • Potato chips and Dip
  • Popcorn
  • Brownies
  • Some candy

And to make yourself feel better as a parent, include a fruit and veggie mixed platter. You'd be surprised at how the kids will get tired of the junk food and eat the healthy stuff too.

Cake

When choosing your cake for your slumber party, you can't go wrong with chocolate!

Everyone likes chocolate and there are countless recipes that you can follow.

You don't have to get fancy on the cake for a slumber party either. A typical round or square layer cake will do with lots of yummy icing on top.

If you do want to get fancy though, the sky is the limit!

You can go with multiple layered cakes with pink icing to even fancier cakes featuring puppies or a girl in a sleeping bag for example. It all depends on your skills or whether or not you purchase it from a baker.

Party Favors / Loot Bags

Anything "girly" will be perfect for filling your party favor bags.

You can include items like hair pins, flavored lip gloss, emery boards, nail polish, hair scrunchies, nail decals, soaps, etc., etc., etc.

The list just goes on and on. And you can get most of this stuff from your local dollar store too so save some money while you're at it.
