Invites

Using green cardstock paper, cut into 3" by 5" cards. Draw a curved road going into the distance (wide at the bottom and narrowing at the top) on yellow cardstock and cut it out. Be sure to use black marker to trace the bricks on the road. Paste this onto the green card.

You can even draw an old wooden house somewhere on the road itself to represent Dorothy's house.

On the front of the card, write something like this:

"You are invited to follow the yellow brick road to [your child's name]'s birthday party!"

On the back of the card, include all other details something like this:

"Attention all Munchkins from Munchkin Country!
Your presence is requested by the Wonderful Wizard of Oz to participate in the celebrations of [your child's name) __th Birthday!
Follow the Yellow Brick Road to our Emerald City [your address].
RSVP the Grand Wizard at [phone number].

Decorations

Convert your party room into "Oz".

Try these ideas:

  • Using yellow chalk or even butcher paper, start at the street adn make a yellow brick road leading up to your house door.

  • Use large cardboard boxes and create Dorothy's house. Set this in your front yard just off to the side of your brick road. Be sure to include a doll underneath the house to represent the Wicked Witch of the East.

  • Use posterboard or butcher paper and paint a rainbow with the words "Welcome to Oz". Hang this above the entrance to the party room.

Costumes / Props

Dressing up is easy for a wizard of Oz party. Request that all of your guests come dressed up as little munchkins. A quick search online will give you lots of ideas on how.

Adults can ever dress up along with them by wearing each specific character (Dorothy, Lion, Scarecrow, Tinman, Witches, etc.) to compliment the party.

Cake

Using your traditional slab cake, you can design a cake yourself by decorating it with a yellow brick road going off into the distance.

At the far end, stand a cardboard picture of a castle (or use a plastic castle).

At the beginning of the yellow brick road, you can add plastic figurines of the main characters.

Other ideas can be suggested by your local baker or you can find many ideas by visiting an online store.
